I Confess…

True Confessions (Inspired by Shari)

I confess…

That I enjoy taking writing breaks between novels and never regret them, even if they last for months.

That I don’t read enough these days. My average is 14 books a year, a little over one book a month. I can’t write and read at the same time, because a good book will suck me away from the world for days and demand my full attention.

That I wouldn’t want to give up my day job even if my writing career took off. I like the stability, and I get more done when I’m busier / under time constraints.

That I don’t enjoy reading or writing short stories.

That some days my inner introvert wins, and I will panic when I’m around a lot of people, even if they’re my friends or people I love.

That I’m utterly useless in the mornings. I walk around like a zombie, bumping into things, and will answer questions but not remember afterwards.

To being the worst judge of my writing. I never know if something I write is good or terrible.

To checking my email and social media compulsively all day long.

Now it’s your turn if you’re game!

  1. I confess:

I loved being a freelancer, but getting an office job took an enormous amount of stress off my shoulders that I didn’t know I was laboring under. I don’t think I would give up my day job either if my writing took off. I don’t think I could write if my income and stability depended on it.

I am becoming more of a misanthropic introvert as I get older and sometimes all my social energy gets used up by work interactions and I don’t have enough for my friends.

Right now, while I’m writing hard, I seem only able to read writing books. Usually I can re-read old favorites, but not this time.

I am totally addicted to twitter.

I feel like the slowest writer EVER and comfort myself by saying “At least I’m not as slow as Junot Diaz.” (and feel evil doing it)

I’m going to steal this idea for my blog.

    Thanks, Theresa!

  2. I agree about short stories. There are a few that I like, but I really like novels a lot more.

Everybody complains about superheroes and zombies and so on taking over movies, but that’s a lot of what I like these days. I even liked Pacific Rim (giant robots! giant monsters!). And don’t get me going on the Resident Evil movies — people who complain that superhero movies being all about guys aren’t looking in the right place.

I still read comic books, too. :-)

At least 50% of the time when I’m listening to music, I’m listening to some version of Les Miserables (and, yes, I am planning to see the new production on Broadway at some point). Do you hear the people sing…

    Anyway.

I’m not on Twitter, and I check Facebook every few days. I do check email all day — but I’m saying that’s because of family responsibilities. That’s my story. :-)

Oh, and I agree about getting more writing done when there are the constraints.

  3. I agree about reading and writing at the same time. I can do it while I’m drafting the beginning and middle of a book, but once I get to the end, I’m so absorbed in that world that it’s hard for me to jump into one another writer has created. I try to make up for it during writing breaks, though. :)

I’m way better about staying away from social media than email … that inbox is like a magnet sometimes!
