Wordlessly, the Alice and Mihail lifted Nikolai to the edge of the ravine. At the bottom, Alice could see two dark shapes. Her father was sprawled near the stream, moaning. Further off, a huge wolf lay curled on its side.

They laid Nikolai close to the edge, in a space where moonlight pooled. Alice gestured for Mihail to give her some space. The sky was clear and glittered with stars like gems. The moon was warmth, and life. Beneath it, Alice knew she could do what she had failed to do that morning ten years before.

She untied Mihail’s bloody jacket, and pressed her dark fingers into Nikolai’s open wound. Heat began to pulse through her body, and her fingers began to glow faintly with the distilled light of the stars. She knew she could do anything, that she could fix him. She opened her eyes, and smoothly, as if in daylight, began to weave the strands of his broken life together again.
