He didn’t have to say the word. Monster, Alice completed the thought written plainly on his face as her eyesight blurred. Everything lurched, and she felt the floor coming up to meet her face.

She couldn’t see Nikolai, she couldn’t see anything, but all her other senses were on overdrive. She could hear the clink of keys swaying in someone’s hands, the creak of wooden floorboards, Nikolai’s shallow breath, the rapid beating of his heart. She could smell his aftershave, the aroma of shampoo, the lingering smell of spaghetti, the impossible fragrance of Jane’s favorite perfume, the scent of dried blood.

The door blasted open, and she covered her ears.

Her father stood in the doorway, gripping a hunting rifle firmly between his callused hands. His face was all angles and teeth. His eyes cut through her like a dull knife.
