“We don’t have to do this now if you don’t want to.” Nikolai squeezed Alice’s hand as they reached the top of the steps.
“I need to do this.”
Before he could say another word, and before she could lose her nerve, Alice turned the cold metal doorknob. The house shuddered.
Alice stepped into the room, careful to stay within the pool of light from the hallway. She felt Nikolai’s warmth step behind her. She didn’t want to admit how much she wanted him there. He was the last calm and rational thing in her world. Nothing else made sense.
